Born into an artistic lineage, Kristine Poole has been following her creative path from her youngest days. Early on, she developed a passion for representational art and rendering the human figure. She is devoted to her study at museums around the world, making annual pilgrimages to draw inspiration from many diverse genres, artists and periods. Kristine began her professional education at Northern Michigan University. After graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in ceramic sculpture, she continued her artistic development apprenticing with master ceramist John Glick and master glass blower Steven Hourigan as well as developing her proficiency in all aspects of the bronze casting process at Shidoni Foundry. Following a brief shift in her creative focus to the performing arts, she applied her refined understanding of movement, line and anatomy to her life-sized fired clay figurative work, resulting in her current style of classically inspired contemporary realism. Her work is currently represented exclusively by EVOKE Contemporary in Santa Fe, NM and is included in museum collections and notable private fine art collections around the country. Her work has been reviewed, featured and recognized with awards in various international publications

includingThe Wall Street Journal, Spectrum, 500 Figures in Clay, Ceramics Ireland, Art Ltd., Fine Art Today, Vision Illustrated and the Art Renewal Center International Salon Catalogue among others. She has been commissioned to create works ranging from the petite to monumental public art works for various public and private collectors including The Carnegie Library in Michigan, Spectrum, The Denver Comic Con, The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish and Big Brothers, Big Sisters. She frequently gives demonstrations, offers professional training on creating large-scale sculpture, and lectures on art and business, most recently at the Albuquerque Museum of Art, Las Cruces Art Museum, The Goggleworks, Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and Santa Fe College.

She currently lives and creates in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains overlooking Santa Fe, frequently collaborating on sculpture projects with her husband, Colin Poole.
The first time I stepped into a clay studio, I knew this was to be my life’s work. The smell and the feel were as familiar to me as my own hands. The tactile nature of form- ing the clay was irresistibly seductive, hinting at an innate connection between creativity and sensuality which led me directly to working with the figure. From the beginning, I knew instinctively that the limitless possibilities presented by an unformed lump of clay made it the perfect medium with which to explore the unlimited expressions imaginable with the human body.

Concept and content are essentialin my work. Classically inspired with contemporary overtones, my sculptures bring into consideration diverse topics including sociocultural experience and commentary, the source of inspiration and the muse, and reflections on my personal life odyssey. These ideas are developed intuitively on the timeless funda- mentals of anatomy and attention to detail, blending the challenges of rendering the beauty of the human form with my inherent curiosity and love of storytelling.

With many pieces, my focus is on telling the story simply through the figure itself, but just as frequently, I use the form as a canvas. I often cover the body with text,juxtapos- ing a visceral reaction to the subtleties of body language with a time-based, cerebral re- sponse to the power of words. Relief imagery and motifs are also used at times to em- bellish the story of the piece. Both the text and relief work create patterns that obscure and at the same time emphasize the forms of the body, heightening the sense of being able to read a person’s interior landscape and experience through the external forms of the body.

Often life-sized, my current sculptures are built hollow, with no armature and fired in one piece.Large scale figurative sculpture has always fascinated me - both the physicality of creating it and the way it leaves a palpable impression of another being in my space, one that demands my notice and attention.

To pause for a few moments, lost in the experience of a sculpture, engaging in the questions, considerations and imagery as its story unfolds is ultimately sharing a mo- ment in the imagination of the maker and opens the door for the viewer to ponder and begin creating for themselves, if only in their mind.
