Sergio Garval was born in 1968 in Guadalajara, Jalisco. As a child he enjoyed playing with pencils and colors; the world of artistic expression and introspection was a natural part of his childhood. He began to paint with oils at 11, and was completely self-taught. In 1987 he entered the University of Guadalajara to study art; he graduated in 1992, having already shown his work in several collective exhibits. He continued his studies with different Masters in Mexico and spent the summer of 1989 in residence at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Since then, his work has been shown in 150 different exhibits, individual and collective, in the U.S., Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Brazil, S. Korea, Costa Rica, Bulgaria, Chile, Romania, and in many museums and galleries in Mexico. He has received recognition and prizes in graphic art, painting, drawing, and sculpture in Mexico. He has been awarded various scholarships in Mexico, including from the National Fund for Culture and Arts, 2003-4 and 2007-10.
