The artist forms his own language through sculpture, the manifestation of his passion for expression and his profound Faith. His work aims to discover miracles and thus focuses on the interruption of regularity, on those moments that are deeply irregular, the moments that stand out, the miracles that keep reverberating in his own life and ours. Anton's style is abstract "I believe that man is a spiritual being having an earthly experience, my work portrays stepping out of the known matrix into the realm of the Spirit."
Anton's inspiration is driven from within the interconnectedness of our species, the flawed cohesiveness and closeness of the Family of Man, the power to love and hope, with the ever-present awareness.No Man is an island. We twist and turn in a vain effort to break free only to be deeply woven into the fabric of man's epic journey his graceful statues have been shown and sold overseas – in Singapore, New York, Amsterdam, California, Bonn, Hamburg, Greece, Dubai and Koln in Germany.
Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu and ex-minister Pik Botha own some of his sculptures, also included in the permanent collections of the Pretoria Art Museum. A collection of his work was exhibited during the inauguration of President Nelson Mandela at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Anton Rupert bought one of Smit's works for the Rembrandt Foundation.
Born in the Transvaal town of Boksburg, RSA, in August 1954. Completely selftaught, in 1979 at the age of sixteen he was awarded the first prize in the SA Association of Arts New Signatures Competition. In 2003 Smit established his own Sculpture Park in South Africa, which is dedicated to exhibiting his life's work, a functioning large-scale studio, alive with his creative passions. The park's three-hectare grounds are situated on the northern side of the Bronkhorstspruit Dam, on a plateau overlooking the water. Amongst the backdrop of natural limestone formations, manicured lawns and succulent gardens, it makes for a lovely environment to view the expansive collection of monumental sculptures and installations.
