Nourelhadi Awad was born on Karni Island in north of Sudan. The surroundings were unpolluted and the vegetation harboured animals in their natural habitat. That is the environment that dictates his work. Awad says that he harks back to his life as a child in Sudan for images and inspiration to sustain his work as a painter of realistic, as well as abstract subjects, including everything from landscape and seascape to people and portraits as well as caricatures and cartoons. He considers colours as a defining element of his work. When asked how he became a painter, he said that though in love with painting since childhood, he got into it full-time after losing his job about five years ago.
